Son of Robert McGregor O'Callaghan and Florence Matilda O'Callaghan nee Fisher of  'Marlin', Quay Street, Bulimba, QLD.

Served his blacksmith apprenticeship with Owen Carton of NSW for five years.

Commenced return to Australia on 19 February 1919 aboard HT Orca disembarking on 12 April 1919
