Dundee paid a high price for her war efforts. By the armistice, over 4,000 men and several women had made the ultimate sacrifice. Their names are recorded in the city’s Roll of Honour.

Monikie-Monikie is a village and civil parish in Angus, Scotland, north-east of Dundee.

John Nicoll was born about December 1885 in Dundee, Shropshire, Scotland. At the time of his enlistment, soon after the outbreak of the war, on 25th August 1914, his parents were dead. Hee nominated his eldest brother, Thomas, as his next of kin. Thomas at first lived at Yanco, then Marrickville and later Warnervale.

The 4th Battalion landed on Gallipoli on Anzac Day, 25th April.

He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 10th May 1915 and buried at the Beach Cemetery, at the southern point of Anzac Cove.
