Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

SALES.—Killed in action, August 8, 1018, Wallace Harry Sales, dearly loved son of Mrs. E. Sales, of 5 Chestnut-road, Auburn.

From the grief and battle and trife,

From the pain and sorrow and sin.
Thou didst silently open the gates
Of heaven, and let him in.

Private Wallace H Sales, who comes of fighting stock, was killed in action in France on 8th August.  He was the elder son of Mrs. E. Sales, of 'Swastiak' Chestnut Road, Auburn and was within three days of being 27 years of age.  He was attached to the 30th Battalion, and left for the war on 24th August, 1916.  He went to England and afterwards to France.  He was unfortunate enough to be gassed last year, which necessitated a months' rest and treatment in England.  He renewed his acquaintance with the trenches in January last, since which time he had taken part in a good deal of fighting.  He was born at Leichhardt, and came to Auburn with this parents when quite a child.  He attended both the Auburn North and Auburn Superior Public Schools, and after his schooldays he worked for years with Messrs. Madill Bros., dairymen, of Auburn.  Prior to enlistiment he worked at Meadowbank.  He leaves a wife and child three years of age.  the other members of the family, who are all well known, are Mrs. R Cheetham, Mrs. J.E. Hodges, Miss Gladys and Mrs Cecil Sales.  The late Private Sales' great grandfather fought at Waterloo, and his father took part in the war for American Indepenence.
