Lieutenant Albert Henry Pickering (Service Nos:V91442/V11119) initially served in the AIF in WWI, enlisting as a Private on 19 July 1916 (he had already had an Application to enlist rejected in 1915). Private Pickering was attached to 2 Machine Gun Coy on 19 September 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Plymouth on board HMAT A73 Commonwealth. Private Pickering served on the Western Front with 22 Machine Gun Coy, and embarked from England for Melbourne on 4 June 1919 on board HT Mahia. Private Pickering was attached to 2nd Machine Gun Battalion at Discharge on 24 August 1919. Brohers Thomas and Arnold also served in WWI.
In WWII, Lieutenant Pickering served in the ACMF from 30 November 1940 to 23 December 1943 with 3 Garrison (Reserve) Battalion and 9 Garrison Battalion. Daughter Beryl (Service No:Vf509192) served in the AWAS in WWII.
ALbert was born in Stawell, Victoria in 1899, fifth of eleven children of Joshua (Joss) Charles Pickering (b1858 in Stawell, Victoria) and his second wife Agnes Eliza Thompson (b1872 in Stawell, Victoria). Joss was a Widower with four children in 1889 when he and Agnes married in Stawell. They settled in the Stawell district (Fyan's Creek and Boroka) where they raised their family and Joss was a Farmer.
Albert was a Farm Labourer at Fyan's Creek via Stawell in 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge from the Army, he was working as a Labourer in Hopetoun in 1921 when he married Ethel Ellen Anderson (b1898 in Stawell, Victoria) in Stawell. Albert and Ethel settled in Hopetoun, where they raised their family and Albert was a Labourer. In 1930 under the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act (Battle to Farm), Albert was awarded 600 acres at Nyallo via Hopetoun - he and Ethel settled there and Albert was a Farmer until the late 1960s when they retired to Hopetoun. Albert died in 1972 and Ethel died in 1983.
