Biography contributed by Andreena Hockley

Captain Alfred John Glendinning, son of Mr. William Glendinning, of Hope-street, Brunswick, was killed in action on the 3rd of August, 1917.

Born on the 20th of August, 1894, he attended the Melbourne High School in 1910-11-12. He was a member of the school cadet team which first gained the championship of Australia. Having completed his course for the Senior Public examination, he gained a Teachers College studentship, and entered that institution in 1913. The principal reported that he was a zealous and industrious worker and bade fair to be a strong factor for good.

Gazetted Lieutenant in the Artillery about two weeks before the war broke out, he enlisted the first day on which volunteers were called for. He saw service in Egypt, Gallipoli, and France. It was in France that he gained his captaincy, being mentioned also in dispatches for "distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty."
