William was a shop assistant and Church of England. Next of kin was his father, John Brown Williamson of 829 Wellington St Perth. His mother was Mary Ann Wall. William was described as being 5 feet 9 ¾ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 36 – 37½ inches, fresh complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He remained in the depot from 3.11.14 to 1.1.15 undergoing basic training as a Private with Service Number 1433, in the 11th Infantry Battalion. On the 8.7.15 he was appointed to the permanent beach party under the command of Captain C.A. Littler 12th Battalion, Adjutant Anzac Cove Area. From the 21.11.15 to the 1.1.16 he was aboard the hospital ship at Gallipoli, then sent to No 3 Aux hospital at Heliopolis, then to Helouan with jaundice and debility. He returned to duty at Ghezvich on the 8.1.16. On the 15.9.16 he was appointed Lance Corporal in the field, then on the 23.9.1916, he was wounded in action, receiving a gunshot wound to his arm and a severe gunshot wound to his head. He was transferred to the Military Hospital in Chatham on the 2.10.1916.

On the 23.3.17 he was transferred to the 70th Battalion and appointed Lance Corporal on the 18.8.17. On the 7.9.17 he was again AWL and forfeited 2 days’ pay.
