A Sad Story of the Spanish Flu

Michael Joseph Frawley was born on 1 April 1877 in Stanthorpe, Queensland. He was working as a miner in Clermont when he enlisted on 7 Dec 1914 aged 37. He was a Private in the 2nd Reinforcement to the 9th Infantry Battalion leaving Australia on 13 February 1915. He arrived at Anzac Cove on 9 May 1915 and saw active duty. In March 1916 he transferred to the 49th Battalion and became a Driver with the 13th Machine Gun Company serving in Egypt and France. In March 1918 he returned to Australia for 6 months furlough and on 4 September 1918 he embarked in Sydney for a return to the European front. During the voyage up the coast of Africa he contracted influenza and died on 24 October 1918 aged 41. WW1 ended on 11 November 1918 just 18 days later. Although surviving unscathed for three years during service in the Great War, he succumbed to Spanish Flu.
