TOO FAR AWAY YOUR GRAVE TO SEE BUT NOT TOO FAR TO THINK OF THEE
The sad news was received in Geraldton last night that Private Arthur Gilbert ('Chum') Whittle, youngest son of. Mr J. Whittle, of Fitzgerald Street, Geraldton, had been, killed in action at the Dardanelles. Deceased, who was 28 years of age, served his apprenticeship with Daniel White and Co., carriage builders, Perth, and had been employed by that firm for a period of fifteen years. He always took a keen interest in military matters and made the most of his training as a cadet and soldier under Sergt. Majors Emmett and Cheetham. He was particularly proficient at gymnastics and acted as a gymnasium in instructor at East Fremantle. All kinds of athletic sports appealed to him and he was a member of the Royal Yacht Cub, and a member of the crews of the White Wings, Cinderella and Mayflower. He was a well known footballer, being a prominent member of the North Fremantle Club, and last season he played with the Geraldton Railway Club. Every year he used to pay a visit to his parents, and just before the war broke out he came prepared to make a more lengthy stay than usual. As soon as the call to arms was issued, he was one of the first to volunteer, joining the first expeditionary force. Great sympathy will be tendered with Mr. and Mrs. Whittle and the members of the family in their bereavement, coming as it does immediately after four others. Since the beginning of the May Mr Whittle has lost two sons, a sister and his niece, in addition to his son's father in law. Mr Whittle senr. is well known, not ony in Geraldton, but throughout the State, and particularly in the railway service having been in the employ of the Railway Department for 32 years. His eldest son, John Gladstone Whittle, is at present on duty as an officer at Rottnest, and he has had a connection of 20 years with the military forces. He served his time in the Government workshops, and after fifteen years there went on the land, where he remained for five years until called up to take duty at Rottnest. Five nephews of Mr. Whittle are also serving with the British Army in France.
