Albert did basic training with B Coy 2nd Depot Battalion at Mitcham from 9 December 1915 to 15 December and was transferred to 10/27th Battalion on 16 December, prior to joining D Coy on 1 January 1916. On 7 March he transferred to the 43rd Battalion and was appointed a Pioneers Sergeant on 9 March.
Albert’s unit embarked A19 Afric from Outer Harbor on 9 June, disembarking at Marsailles on 20 July. He was selected to go Corps School to attend the Officers’ Cadet Brigade at Cambridge, England, returning to the 43rd on 17 August. Albert served with the Small Arms School during September, rejoining the 43rd on 20 October. On 25 November he returned to France, having been appointed Lieutenant.
On 17 February 1918 Alfred was sent to the Brigade Officers School. After returning from leave in April, a bout of scabies and balanitis led to Albert being admitted to the 39th General Hospital on 1 May. He was seconded for duty at the Australian Convalescent Depot at Havre on 20 July. Albert returned to Australia from England on the Kildonian 21 June 1919 and was discharged on 15 August.
Albert was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Albert Galvin died at St.Peters, Adelaide on 13 January, 1938.
