James was the eldest of five children of Joseph William Morgan (b1865 in Wales) and Charlotte (Kitty) Conwell (b1866 in Ballarat, Victoria). Joseph - a Wharf Labourer - and Kitty married in 1890 in Melbourne, Victoria and relocated to Fremantle, WA in 1896. Joseph worked as a Lumper and Stevedore, and in May 1917 enlisted with the AIF and was Discharged the same month for falsely stating his age.

James- a Teacher (Civil Servant) in Fremantle, WA - served as Captain with the Senior Cadets (Commonwealth Military Cadet Corps) 87 A Area B Coy (Trove: The Daily News Thurs 27 July 1911) and in August 1914 enlisted with the AIF. He served as a Lieutenant with the 11th Infantry Battalion and was WiA in 1915 at Gallipoli Peninsula. Discharged as Medically Unfit in April 1916, James travelled to England and served as a Captain with the 21st Battalion Welsh Regiment from December 1916 to June 1918.

Returning to Perth, WA and teaching, James married Marguerite Sophie Duvoisin (b1895 in Scotland) in 1923 in Perth WA. James and Marguerite lived in Perth and Fremantle, where James was a Teacher. He died in 1937 and Marguerite in 1965.
