64 years ago today, on the 25th July 1961, Private William Hamilton Cooper, 26th Battalion (Reg No-4114), farmer from Lismore, New South Wales and Upper Clarence River (1931) and Marrickville?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 70. BAPTIST-K NE. 28.

Born at Brushgrove, New South Wales on the 27th May 1891 to William Hamilton, died 17.4.1931, Maclean, N.S.W., age 91, buried at Maclean Cemetery, N.S.W., unmarked grave?, and Catherine (Katherine, Kathleen) Cooper nee Johnson, died 2.2.1935, Ballina, N.S.W., age 74, sleeping at Maclean Cemetery, N.S.W., unmarked grave?, from Woodford, Clarence River, New South Wales; husband of Isabell (Isabella) Lillian Cooper nee Munro, married 1921, Maclean, N.S.W., died 12.11.1965, age 70, sleeping here -  enlisted on the 2nd September1915 at Lismore, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A73 Commonwealth on the 28th March 1916.

Wounded in action - 5.11.1916 (GSW scalp), 12.11.1917 (gassed), 8.8.1918 (GSW left thigh, mild).

Invalided to England 9.11.1916 and 28.8.1918.

Admitted to hospital 20.11.1917 (bronchitis, after being gassed).

Commenced return to Australia 2.1.1919.

William arrived home invalided on the 22nd February 1919, not being discharged medically unfit (defective hearing) until the 3rd July 1919.

Mr. Cooper’s name has been inscribed on the St Mark's Anglican Church Nimbin Great War Honour Roll, Lismore and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
