Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Dowell was with a party of about a dozen men of the 14th Battalion, led by Lieutenant Luscombe, who were captured by the Turks while trying to attack Hill 971 on the 8 August 1915. He was last seen severely wounded in the thigh which had a fractured the bone. He was fortunate to survive his ordeal as a prisoner of war in Constantinople. He was repatriated to Alexandria Egypt in November 1918 and returned to Australia the same month. His wounds caused a lot of medical problems for the rest of his life. He has over 300 pages of repatriation files in the National Archives. Dowell died in 1946, age 55.
