Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Charles Floyd was the son of Charles Clifton Floyd and Mary Floyd.
Charles Floyd’s parents had both passed away by 1904 when he was less than six years of age. On his application to enlist he said he was a ‘state’ child. He gave his nearest of kin as his younger brother, Roy Floyd of Bundaberg, Queensland. Roy was only 17 years old at the time.
His older brother, 4013 Pte. Cecil Francis Floyd 31st Battalion AIF was killed at Polygon Wood, Belgium 26 September 1917, aged 20.
When Charles enlisted in 1917, he was only 19 years of age. He left Australia with the 31st Battalion and shortly after he arrived in England, he went absent without leave for three weeks at Hurdcott. He was court martialed on 11 December 1917 and sentenced to 40 days detention.
Charles was released and joined the 52nd Battalion in France on 5 February 1918. He was only at the front for about seven weeks before he was killed in action. He has no known grave.
His brother Roy was left all his effects and his medals went to his oldest brother Cornelius.
The oldest brother, 1676 Pte. Cornelius Alexander Floyd 25th Battalion AIF was returned to Australia with severe wounds to his left arm in July 1917.
