Born at Saxilby, Lincoln, England on the 4th October 1880 to James Brumby and Mary Ellen Middleton nee Codling; husband of Clara Emma Middleton nee Ford (married 27.8.1907 at the Parish Church, Saxilby, United Kingdom, died?), John enlisted October 1914 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 23.8.1915 (GSW buttocks and chest), 2.2.1918 (mustard gas poisoning), Mr Middleton, being an "Original Anzac", was granted Special Leave on the 3rd October 1918, but stayed in England.

Returned home November 1919, being discharged on the 9th December 1919.

John’s name has not been inscribed on the Newcastle Master Builders' Association Roll of Honour (unveiled on the 23th July 1918, 23 names inscribed) or any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
Wife and children arrived in Australia 1922, sailing from London 4.5.1922 on the SS Barrabool.
Mr Middleton had been resting in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so December 2016 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
