Died on this date – 9th August…… Private Stanley Llewellyn Jenkins was born at Highworth, Wiltshire, England in 1878. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 16th August, 1915 as a 35 year old, single, Farmer from Manjimup, Western Australia.

Private Jenkins was transferred to 12th Reinforcements of 11th Battalion on 1st November, 1915 & promoted to Corporal.

Corporal Stanley Llewellyn Jenkins embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia on RMS Mongolia on 22nd November, 1915 with the 11th Infantry Battalion, 12th Reinforcements. He was written up for a Crime on 29th January, 1916 – Absent from Garrison Camp at Zeitoun from 7 am to 8.30 pm & forfeited 1 days’ pay.

Corporal Jenkins joined 11th Battalion at Habieta on 2nd March, 1916 & was posted to “D” Company. He reverted to the rank of Private on joining his Battalion.
Private Jenkins embarked from Alexandria on 29th March, 1916 on H.M.T. Corsican & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 5th April, 1916.

Private Stanley Llewellyn Jenkins was wounded in action in France between 22 – 25th July, 1916. He was admitted to Field Ambulance on 23rd July, 1916 with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to leg. Private Jenkins was transferred to Casualty Clearing Station then on to the Ambulance Train & admitted to Hospital at Rouen, France. He was invalided from France on Hospital Ship Gloucester Castle on 26th July, 1916.

Private Jenkins was admitted to the Beaufort War Hospital, Bristol, England on 27th July, 1916. The Hospital Admissions form recorded the following: “Through wounds lower third, incomplete fracture, verified by X.R. Simply shrapnel bullet hole through tibia, tube inserted through, much cellulitis. Free incisions, continuous saline irrigation, improvement for 3 days & then rapidly became worse locally & generally. Amputation through knee. Death from cardiac failure 8 hours later.”

Private Stanley Llewellyn Jenkins died on 9th August, 1916 at Beaufort War Hospital, Bristol, England from wounds received in action in France – G.S.W. to leg, Cellulitis & Cardiac Failure.

He was buried in Arnos Vale Cemetery, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England where 21 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located. His name is remembered on the CWGC Screen Wall & he has a flat Memorial Stone.
