HONORING SOLDIERS.

Private N. J. M. Sears, of the 43rd Battalion, was entertained by a large number of friends recently at Claypans. Mr. John Searle, jun., pre sided over a large attendance. Speeches were de livered by Messrs. Dingle (home missionary), W. Towill, and J. Searle, sen. Items were also given by Misses Bradley and Spurling, and Mr. Dingle. Mr. Dingle, on behalf of the residents, presented Private Sears with a sum of money. A farewell social was tendered Privates Sears and A. Huchinson by the residents of Forster. Mr. A. Francis presided 0ver a large attendance, and wished the departing soldiers good luck and a safe return. The chairman's remarks were endorsed by Messrs. J. Seals, A. and W. Johns, Huchinson, C. P. Payne, and W. Sears. Others helping in the entertainment were Misses Bradley and Harris, Messrs. Dingle, Haby, and Prosser. Mrs. Sears supplied music. Mr. J. D. Prosser, on behalf of friends, presented private Sears with gifts. Presents will also be given later to Private Huchinson.

THE LATE PRIVATE SEARS.

Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Sears, of "Linlithgow," Forster, have been notified that their only son, Private N. J. M. Sears, was killed in action in France on July 31. He was born at Forster on August 6, 1897, and was educated at Clayton public school. He enlisted on February 17, 1916, and sailed for England on June 9. After several months of training at Salisbury Plains, he embarked for France on November 28, and was in active service until the time of his death. Private Sears, who had a cheerful and kindly disposition, was deservedly popular with a wide circle of acquaintances.
