Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Harry - born in 1893 in Guildford WA - grew up on a farm in Wongan, Armadale WA. The third of eight children, Harry's parents Fredrick Elijah Powell (b1864 in Norfolk, England) and Minnie Amelia Mears (b1873 in London, England) married in 1889 in Guildford WA. They settled at Wongan in Armadale WA where they farmed cattle, oats, barley and vegetables. Frederick had been a Shepherd/Farm Labourer in Norfolk and 'He worked like a horse. Yeah, he had nothing ...' (Percy Powell: Transcript 1992). Harry attended Armadale Primary School with his two older brothers, and with no Doctor locally, all children were birthed by a Midwife and Minnie attended to any medical emergencies -'Mum had a great big medical book, she used to go by that' (Percy Powell; 1992). All travel and shopping was done with a horse and sulky, and in 1903 Frederick won the Armadale ploughing competition with the straightest and neatest ploughing.

Harry worked as a Police Constable in Port Hedland WA - 'He was up there on his own with a blacktracker in the early days' brother Percy said in an Interview in 1992 (Bertwhistle Local Studies Library).

In September 1915 Harry was a Farmhand/Labourer in Armadale WA when he enlisted in the AIF (Service No:2068). He served in France with 10th Light Horse Regiment and was a Bombardier with 4th Divisional Artillery when he was Discharged in September 1919. Brothers Freddy and Bert also served in WWI.

Harry returned to Armadale WA where he worked as a Labourer. He died in 1982 and his ashes were 'scattered to the wind at Fremantle Cemetery' (Metropolitan Cemeteries Board WA).
