Leading Aircraftman Roy Halford Ball (Service No:22111) enlisted in the RAAF on 8 April 1940 at No 3 Recruiting Centre Brisbane as an Aircraftman I, and was posted to No 2 Recruitment Depot Sydney - mustered as a Trainee Rigger, re mustered as Flight Rigger then Fitter. Described as a 'Good type. Bright. Cheery. Intelligent' (NAA 1940), ACI Ball was promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 1 November 1944, and served in New Guinea with No 5 Squadron (9 December 1944 - 11 July 1945). LAC Ball was attached to 3 Aircraft Depot at Discharge on 1 November 1945.

Roy was born in Brisbane, QLD in 1919, third of six children of Nicholas John Ball (b1892 in Brisbane, QLD) and Elizabeth Margaret McLaren (b1896 in Brisbane, QLD). Nicholas and Elizabeth married in 1915 in Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family and Nicholas was a Labourer.

Roy worked as Pipe Stripper for Hume Pipe Coy, and was a Spot Welder (Electrical) in Brisbane in 1940 when he married Roberta (Ruby) Gill Wilson (1920 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland) - Ruby immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1923, arriving in Brisbane on board the Moreton Bay. Following his Discharge from the RAAF, Roy and Ruby settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Roy was a Sheetmetal Worker and Carrier. Roy died in 1988 and Ruby in 2006.
