Son of Luke Knight Vail and Catherine Jane Vail nee Sergeant of Glenferrie Road, Malvern, Victoria. Brother of Cecil Knight Vail who returned to Australia on 18 September 1917 having served with the 37th Battalion.

Next of kin given as his brother Charles Vail of Glenferrie Road, Malvern, Victoria.

Commenced return to Australia on 29 January 1916 aboard HT Suffolk
