John was the youngest child of Frederick Walter Johnson (b1890 in Ipswich, QLD) and Estelle Ivans (b1900 in Ipswich, QLD). Fred (a Carpenter) and Estelle married in 1921 in Brisbane, QLD - Fred had served in WWI as a Private (Service No:1675). Fred and Estelle moved to Cooloolabin near Nambour, where Fred was a Farmer until the mid 1930s when Estelle moved in to Nambour and worked as a Dressmaker and Fred worked initially in Isisford as a Labourer before moving to Brisbane and working as a Carpenter.

John was a Junior School Teacher in Hughenden, QLD when he enlisted in the RAAF (Service No:123019) in December 1942. He served as an Aircraftman and Leading Aircraftman (Electrician) at No 3 STT Ultima (17 January 1943), 1 BAGS Evans Head (25 July 1943) and with No 549 Squadron (RAF, 21 February 1944). John was in Darwin from 11 July 1944 to 14 October 1945 and was attached to 3 Aircraft Depot when he was Discharged in January 1946.

Settling in Brisbane following his Discharge, John returned to studies and became a Public Servant. He married Adelaide Margaret Berry (b1928 in Boonah, Ipswich QLD) in the early 1950s - Adelaide was working as a Clerk Typist in Brisbane in 1949. Colin and Adelaide settled in Brisbane, where Colin died in 1971 and Adelaide in 2021.
