Family history
Born in Christchurch 23 December 1885 to British travellers Walter and Martha Chappell. Raised in Traralgon, Vic and was a journalist before moving to Mundubbera in Qld, as a farmer. Enlisted 13th August 1915 for the 7/26 Battalion in Brisbane. Embarked from Australia 30 December 1915. Served in Zeitoun, Tel-Rl-Kevin, Marseilles, Viviers Hill, Belgium, wounded 4th August 1917 in right arm and thigh. Admitted to Wimereux Military hospital, 14 August 1917, then transferred to Brighton hospital in England 30th April 1918. Transferred to Dartford then Weymouth, and returned to Australia per D83 from England Compound Comminuted fracture of right femur (GSW). Discharged formally 31st August 1920. Married Ruby McLennan 28th August 1924, father of 6 children before his untimely death at age 47 years on 28th October 1933 in Surat. Occupation was Shire Clerk at time of death, and cause of death Gangrene of the lung, haemorrhage and heart failure.
