A forgotten digger of The Great War and Sandgate Cemetery.
Private Alfred Ernest Barry, 18th Battalion, loco cleaner from 26 Gulliver Street, Hamilton (Hamilton Park), New South Wales, father of three, was laid to rest on the Monday morning of the 20th April 1953, age 55. CATHOLIC 2-51. 65.

Born at Hamilton, New South Wales on the 22nd May 1897 to James and Mary Ann Barry (Slevert); husband of Gertrude Emily Barry nee? (married?, died?), Alfred enlisted May 1915 with the 20th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Hospitalised with appendicitis - 7.10.1915, trench feet - 17.11.1916, SW scalp & hip, slight - 9.10.1917, GSW right shoulder - 3.10.1918, Alfred was invalided home February 1919.

Mr Barry’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor and the Hamilton Loco Employees Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 8th October 1916). Name not inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial.
For 62 years Alfred had been resting in an unmarked grave, so I have placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery with my brother.
69 years ago today, on the Monday morning of the 20th April 1953, Private Alfred Ernest Barry, 20th Battalion (Reg No-1668), loco cleaner from 24 Gulliver Street, Hamilton (Hamilton Park), New South Wales, father of three (Norman A, James E, Frederick P or Paul), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 55. CATHOLIC 2-51. 65.
Born at Hamilton, New South Wales on the 22nd May 1897 to James and Mary Anne Sievert nee Playford; husband of Gertrude Emily Barry nee Inman (married Birmingham, England, 1918, died 24.8.1971, Beresfield Crematorium), Alfred enlisted May 1915 with the 18th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 2.9.1915 (knee), 7.10.1915 (appendicitis, slight).
Wounded in action - 17.11.1916 (trench feet), 9.10.1917 (GSW scalp & hip, slight), 3.10.1918 (GSW right shoulder).
Invalided to England - 7.10.1918.
Alfred was invalided home February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 3rd March 1919.
Mr. Barry’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor and the Hamilton Loco Employees Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 8th October 1916, 76 names originally inscribed, 7 Fallen, 97 names now inscribed, only 8 designated as Fallen). Unfortunately, name not inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial.
I located Alfred resting in an unmarked grave, another Forgotten Digger of The Great War, so October 2015 I placed a cross adorned with poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of Alfred’s service and sacrifice.
I submitted an application to DVA July 2021 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip, and this was accepted August 2021.
Honour and Dignity to be restored.
