Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

George White and his brothers Herbert J. White and William White (died of measles 1898) were residents of the Ballarat Orphanage between 1893 and 1906. George and Herbert appear to have been then raised by an aunt Mrs. W.H. Davey. George was a tram driver when he enlisted on 15 April 1915. He served a Gallipoli with the 1st and 6th Field Ambulance, then France with the 1st and 6th Field Ambulance. George was very badly wounded on 25 July 1916, with gunshot wounds to back, and he was shell shocked as well. He was evacuated to England and admitted to the Netley Hospital in Hampshire on the 31 August 1916. His condition was listed as “on admission was in a helpless condition, paraplegia….” George died of his wounds in hospital on 10 August 1916, five days after his brother Herbert was killed in action at Pozieres.

A tree was planted for George Phillip White in the Ballarat Orphanage's Arthur Kenny Avenue of Honour.
