Alfred was the youngest of six children of James Halnan Hallenan (b1870 in Modewarre, Victoria) and Louisa (Gina) Georgina Searby (b1877 in Geelong, Victoria). James - a Labourer - and Gina married in 1911 in Geelong, Victoria. By 1918 the family was living in Wollongong, NSW where James worked as a Labourer. In February 1918 James enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:5692) and served in Suez with 14th Light Horse Regiment until January 1919. James and Gina settled in Wollongong, NSW where James was a Labourer.

Alfred commenced work at fourteen years of age in Wollongong, NSW as a Junior Salesman for Frederick Ash Pty Ltd (Hardware Store). He was the Lismore Branch Manager/Travelling Salesman for the company in 1935 when he married Velma Mary Vewkoff (b1916 in Sydney, NSW). Alfred enlisted in the RAAF in November 1942 (Aircraftman 1; Service No:79524) and served with No 2 Fighter Sector HQ and No 105 Fighter Sector. He was a Leading Aircraftman attached to 7 Aircraft Depot when he was Discharged in September 1945. Brother Royston (Lance Bombardier; Service No:N468260) served with the ACMF.

Alfred and Velma settled in Lismore, where Alfred was the Branch Manager/Travelling Salesman for the same company. He and Velma divorced in 1959 and Alfred relocated to Sydney NSW in 1980. He died in 1993.
