Biography contributed by Michael Silver

Frank Hingston McDonagh came to Gunnedah, New South Wales from Victoria after he was orphaned at the age of 14. He was in the care of his uncle George and worked in the McDonagh department store before trying to enlist at the age of 16. He was rejected for military service, because of his small stature and obvious youth.

But Frank perservered and was eventually accepted in July 1915 (at 17 years 10 months). Attached to the 1st Battalion, he was involved in the battle of Pozieres where he suffered severe shell shock from the relentless artillery bombardments. He was hospitalised, then given a medical discharge, returning to Australia in October 1916.

This however didn't finish his war - in July 1917 he re-enlisted and served the remainder of the war in France with the 13th Battalion.

He also enlisted for World War II, serving with the 58th/59th Infantry Battalion in the Middle East and South Pacific, including a stint with 'Z' Force on Moratai Island.

Frank McDonagh died in 1975, aged 77.
