Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Arthur David Smith was the son of Major David Smith, of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, Kent, England and his wife Margaret Smith. Their address was also given as, Plumstead, London. After the war, the father, Major or Colonel David Smith was living at Ramsgate, England.

Stewart arrived in Australia during mid-1914, aged 15 years and 6 months, along with his older brother, Stewart Allen Smith who was 17 years of age. They were both farming at Lismore, New South Wales, on the property of W. Parmenter.

Arthur enlisted in September 1916, only 2 years after arriving from England, and still only 17 years of age.

His older brother, 4898 Pte. Stewart Allen Smith 15th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917, aged 20.

Arthur enlisted with the 47th Battalion but joined the 15th Battalion on the Western Front during June 1917. He was reported as killed in action at Hollebeke, Belgium on 28 January 1918. His father stated he was 19 years of age. Neither brother has a known grave.

Another brother, 3128 Sapper Alexander William Smith 8th Field Company Engineers, enlisted from Melbourne and was returned to Australia with heart problems in late 1917.
