Leading Aircraftman John Charles Smith (Service No:46425) enlisted in the RAAF at No 4 Recruiting Centre Perth on 12 February 1942 as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Storehand and re mustered as Electroplater. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman in 1944, LAC Smith served with 1 Aircraft Depot Laverton, and was attached to 4 Aircraft Depot at Discharge on 30 November 1945.

John was the youngest of two children of Ernest Frederick Smith (b1874 in Daylesford, Victoria) and Maria Regina French (b1872 in Smeaton, Victoria). Ernest was working for the WAGR in Fremantle as a Striker in 1896, and he and Maria married in Fremantle in 1902. Ernest and Maria settled in Cottesloe, where they raised their family and Ernest worked as a Striker and Blacksmith.

John finished schooling and in 1924 started a six year Apprenticeship with Levinson & Son Jewellers in Perth. In 1937 he was a Jeweller in Cottesloe when he married Edna Emmalyn Tychsen (b1909 in Melbourne, Victoria). John and Edna settled in Cottesloe, where they raised their family and John was a Jeweller with Levinson & Sons when he enlisted in the RAAF in 1942. Following his Discharge, John and Edna lived in Cottesloe, South Perth and Fremantle, where John worked as a Jeweller. John died in 1983 and Edna in 1988.
