Private Albert Henry Newman (Service No:4570) enlisted in the AIF on 4 October 1916, and was attached to 32nd Infantry Battalion on 16 December 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Adelaide for Devonport on board HMAT A35 Berrima. Private Newman served on the Western Front (Gunner, Driver) with 8th Training Battalion and 3rd Field Artillery Brigade, embarking from England for Adelaide on 18 December 1918 on board HT Aeneas. Driver Newman was attached to 3rd Field Artillery Brigade at Discharge on 17 March 1919 (Medically Unfit for further service). Nephew Edward George Brookes Newman served with the New Zealnd Forces in WWII (Service No:32073) and was KiA in Greece. Younger brother Leslie (Service No:SX4773) served in WWII.

Albert was born in Broken Hill, New South Wales in 1891, third of nine children of Albert (Harry) Henry Newman (b1859 in Gawler, South Australia) and Ellen Josephine Critchley (b1865 in Kanmantoo, South Australia). Harry (a Storekeeper in Jamestown) and Ellen married in Petersburg in 1883, and lived there before moving to Broken Hill in the mid 1880s. Harry and Ellen lived at Acacia Siding via Broken Hill, where Harry was a Storekeeper. The family returned to South Australia in the late 1890s, living in Lower Light via Port Wakefiled before settling in Adelaide by 1900. Harry worked as a Watchman.

Albert was working as a Driver in Adelaide when he enlisted in the AIF in 1916. Following his Discharge, he was a Driver in 1920 when he married his first wife Florence Gwendoline Glennon (b1893 in Yatala, South Australia). Albert and Florence settled at Henley Beach, where they raised their daughter and Albert was a Taxi Driver. Florence died in 1947 Albert in 1968.
