Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Cyril Waghorn was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Sophia Waghorn of Petersham, New South Wales. His father had passed away in 1911 and his widowed mother died in 1920.

Cyril’s younger brother, 335 Cpl. John Roy Waghorn was an original member of the 18th Battalion, serving at Gallipoli and was killed in action at Second Bullecourt on 3 May 1917, aged 22.

Cyril was reported missing near Goudecourt on 5 November 1916, and then a month later his name appeared on a German death list. It seems he was badly wounded and was captured by the Germans, but he died of his wounds shortly after and was buried by the Germans in Beugny Cemetery. His grave was eventually found in Beugny during 1923 by the Imperial War Graves Commission and his body was reinterred in the Achiet-Le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension.
