Born in Perth WA in 1921, Albert was the youngest of three children - all sons who served in WWII - of Thomas Henry Carthew (b1876 at Running Creek in Myrtleford, Victoria) and Elizabeth McGee (b1882 in Melbourne, Victoria). Thomas was a Prospector at Boolgarrie in Coolgardie WA in 1911 when he and Elizabeth married. The family lived at Yellowdine in Yildarn WA, where Thomas was a Railways Repairer and was at Southern Cross WA in 1921 when Albert was born. Thomas worked as a Length Runner - riding out daily on a bicycle carrying a hammer and plugs to identify and repair leaks in the water pipeline. By 1925 they had settled in Bencubbin WA, where Thomas was a Railways Ganger.
In February 1941 Albert enlisted in the RAAF - his two older brothers were already serving in the Army. Albert (Leading Aircraftman; Service No:A54883) was attached to 4 Aircraft Depot in March 1946 when he was Discharged.
ALbert was in Boulder WA in 1948 when he married Elsie Bethel Bodinner (b1928 in Boulder WA) and the couple lived in Perth WA where Albert worked as a Mechanic. In the early 1950s he moved his family to Boulder, WA where he worked as a Fitter, before moving to Kambalda WA in the early 1970s and working as an Engineer. Albert died in 2008 and Elsie in 2013.
