Pilot Officer Alexander William Butler (Service No: 6181) enlisted in the RAAF is Sydney after being informed at the Brisbane, QLD Recruitment Office that 'air crew were not required' (NAA). Starting as an Aircraftman I in 1939, on 8 September 1945 he was appointed Pilot Officer and was described as 'quiet and unassuming, works hard and is thoroughly dependable. Has a pleasant disposition and is not easily flurried. He is well liked by his associates' (NAA: 8 September 1945). As Flight Sergeant Butler, he served in 1944 with ist TAF Morotai, and postings included 24 and 75 Squadrons, and Sydney, Townsville, Victor Harbour and Wagga. Pilot Officer Bulter was attached to 5 Aircraft Depot when he was Discharged on 10 December 1945.
Born in 1915 in Auckland NZ to Alfred Alexander Butler (b1887 in New Zealand) and Helen Theresa Strachan (b1892 in London, England). Alfred (a General Dealer) and Helen (a Tailoress) married in Auckland NZ in 1915. Helen had worked as a Waistcoat Maker in London before arriving in Wellington NZ in 1914 on board the Ionic. By the 1920s the family had moved to Brisbane QLD, where Alfred was a Traveller.
Alexander attended Eagle Junction State School and Central Technical College Brisbane, and served a five year apprenticeship with Austral Motors Pty Ltd. He was a Motor Mechanic with the company in Brisbane QLD in 1939 when he married Iris Celia Leach (b1917 in Wellington, NZ). Following his Discharge in 1945, Alexander and Iris settled in Brisbane QLD where Alexander was a Mechanic. Iris died in 1992, and Alexander died in 2005.
