Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
98 years ago today, on the Sunday afternoon of the 13th August 1922 (2 funerals on this day), Private Lewis Charles (Charlie) Bartholomew, 5th Australian Pioneer Battalion, miner (Dudley Colliery) from Young Road, Lambton, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 29. BAPTIST-H SW. 6.

Born at Lambton, New South Wales on the 3rd July 1893 to Charles Samuel and Mary Bartholomew, Lewis enlisted August 1915 with the 31st Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Wounded in action - 18.5.1917 (gas poisoning - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article134856527, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article134863740) and admitted to hospital 23.1.1918 (epididymitis), Charlie returned home April 1919, being discharged medically unfit 5th August 1919.

Mr Bartholomew’s name has been inscribed on the Lambton Park Citizens' Memorial Gates (photos, unveiled on the 12th April 1919), Lambton/New Lambton Municipal District Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
Charlie’s headstone tells us that he served with the 1st A.I.F., and I have placed poppies in remembrance of his duty for God, King and Country.
