82 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 7th May 1942, Private George Charles Nesbitt, 45th Battalion (Reg No- 4613A), clerk from C/O Stationmaster, Hamilton, New South Wales and 39 Beaumont Street, Hamilton, N.S.W. and 2 Ivy Street, Islington, N.S.W., father of three (Edward John, Katherine, William John), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 48. ANGLICAN 1-07. 59.

Born at Teralba, New South Wales on the 8th May 1894 to Harry Frank, Stationmaster, Hamilton Railway Station, died 3.7.1918, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 65, from 39 Beaumont Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., and Katherine Nesbitt nee Moy, died 11.2.1935, Islington, N.S.W., mother of 7, age 75, from 39 Fern Street, Islington, N.S.W.; husband of Joy Muriel Nesbitt nee Bradley (married 1941, Newcastle, N.S.W., died?), George enlisted on the 22nd August 1915 with the 1st Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board RMS Osterley on the 15th January 1916.

Admitted to hospital 21.11.1916 (influenza), 24.1.1917 (influenza), 20.7.1917 (pleurisy and pneumonia, dangerously ill).

Wounded in action - 26.8.1916 (shell shock), 11.4.1917 (GSW face, head).

Commenced return to Australia 6.5.1919.

George arrived home invalided on the 27th June 1919, not being discharged until the 30th May 1921.

Mr. Nesbitt’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor and the Hamilton St. Peter's Anglican Church Honor Roll.

I have placed poppies at George’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
