LAC Bates was attached to 1 Aircraft Depot Laverton when he was Discharged on 8 July 1946.

Born in 1921 in Wonthaggi Victoria, George was the youngest of five children of Percy Alexander Bates (b1882 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Clara Crook (b1888 in Darrameit, Victoria). Percy (a Labourer) and Clara married in 1910 in Melbourne and settled at Wonthaggi where Percy was a Coal Miner. In the early 1930s the family moved to Melbourne where Percy worked as a Labourer.

George attended Prahran Technical School for twelve months and worked as a Car Assembler for Neal's Motors in Melbourne prior to his enlistment. In 1945 in Melbourne, George married Joyce Lillian Hayman (b1923 in Kerang, Victoria).
