Leading Aircraftman Robert James Green (Service No:52274) served with the RAAF from 21 March 1942 to 19 December 1945. LAC Green was attached to 1 Aircraft Depot Laverton at Discharge. He had served in the Militia (Service No:186354) with MU Rifles from 1 October 1931 to 30 June 1935.
Born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1911, Bobby was the fifth of seven children of John Green (b1871 at Mt Moliagul nr Tarngullia, Victoria) and Mary Magdaline Hall (b1890). John (a Hairdresser) and Mary married in 1905 in Melbourne, Victoria. John served in the AIF (Private; Service No:3767) in WWI. In the early 1900s Mary was admitted to the Larundel Mental Asylum, where she died in 1960. John died in 1920, and the children were made Wards of the State.
Bobby was a Bicycle Mechanic in Melbourne in the early 1930s and played for Carlton Football Club for thirteen years (1932 - 1945). He 'was recognised as one of the best utility men in the League. He played in most positions but was outstanding at half-forward' (The Argus; 9 May 1949). In 1935 Bobby was awarded the Carlton Trophy for best and fairest player, and represented Victoria in inter-state matches as a wingman. In 1935 in Melbourne, Bobby married Mary (Molly) Cecilia Toogood (b1909 in Melbourne, Victoria). Bobby and Molly lived in Melbourne where they raised their family and Bobby worked as a Mechanic and played for Carlton Football Club. Bobby died in 1949 as a result of head injuries received when he was hit by a car as he went to board a tram. Molly died in 1989.
