Allan was the second of six children of Stannum Arthur Probert (b1888 in Valery, Bellingen, NSW) and Hilda Isabel Trevethan (b1881 in Toowoomba, QLD). Stannum (a Clerk in Wolfram, nr Stanthorpe, QLD) and Hilda married in 1912 in Toowoomba, QLD. Stannum was a Farmer on the Darling Downs and in Woodford.

Allan worked as a Farm Hand in Woodford, QLD before becoming a Mechanic in 1935. He was working in Brisbane, QLD when he enlisted in the RAAF (Service No:22310) in April 1940. He was a Sergeant attached to 3 Aircraft Depot when he was Discharged in June 1946.

Returning to Ipswich, QLD, Allan was working as a Mechanic when he married Thelma Lillian Boatwright (nee Spokan; b1922 in Ipswich, QLD). Allan and Thelma settled in Brisbane where Allan worked as a Mechanic/Flight Engineer. Thelma died in 1956 and Allan spent some years working in PNG for Air Niugine at Jackson's Airport in Port Moresby.He died in Hervey Bay, QLD in 2006.
