John Oliver

He was born in Manchester, England and later moved to Australia where he resided at Eastern Creek. His father, George Oliver resided at Hornby Road, Eastern Creek.

Before enlistment he was an upholsterer which provides furniture with a soft covering.

He enlisted at Sydney Showgrounds on 3rd October 1916 at the age of 24 and
he embarked on 9th November 1916 from Sydney on HMAT 'Benalla' A24.

John Oliver served with the 36th Australian Infantry Battalion and was one of Carmichael's 1,000.

John Oliver was killed in action in the Battle of Messines in Belgium on 24th July 1917.

John Oliver is remembered with honour in the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.
