James Delve belonged to a farming family on Goran Lake, near Curlewis, New South Wales. He was only 20 when he left for war in May, 1916 as a member of B Company of the 33rd Battalion.
On the night of June 28, 1917, Private Delve was one of seven men asleep in a dug-out in the support lines at Messines when a high explosive shell landed on their position.
He was unconscious when he was dug out of the trench. Suffering a fractured skull and shrapnell wounds, he died soon after arrival at the 11th Casualty Clearing Station. Private James Delve was buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery.
