Carl left Adelaide with the 12th Battalion on 21 September 1915 on board HMAT A 15 Star of England arriving in Mudros on 27 November prior to being sent to France on 5 April 1916. He was treated at the 7th Field Ambulance for a septic throat on 6 April 1917 and was able to rejoin his unit on 11 April. Carl was wounded in the shoulder and back and his lung was affected by gas on 15 April. His condition was listed as severe. Consequently he was treated at Weymouth, London General Hospital and the 1st Auxiliary Hospital at Harefield in England throughout the latter part of 1917. Carl returned to Australia on the Runic on 20 December and was discharged as medically unfit on 20 February 1918, receiving a pension of two pounds and five shillings per fortnight from 1 March 1918.
