Son of Stephen Thorn Vandewater and Mary Vandewaterof Marion Street, Enmore, NSW. Brother of William Thorn Vandewater who returned to Australia on 22 March 1919  having served with the 1st Field Artillery Brigade

Commenced return to Australia on 12 April 1919 aboard  HT Suffolk disembarking on 6 June 1919

During 1922c Stephen married Louisa M, Reeve in Rockdale, NSW
