Biography contributed by John Edwards

"Bandsman Alfred R. Collier, who was killed as the result of a motor explosion in Rabaul Harbor, New Britain, on 10th July, was son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Collier, of 115 Easey-st., Collingwood. He belonged to the Naval Brigade band; but as he informed his parents, while on active service at Rabaul, he was placed in charge of three motor boats. Being an enthusiastic amateur motor boatman in Melbourne, he was well qualified for this duty. It is assumed that the accident was due to an explosion on one of these boats. Deceased was a guard on the Victorian railways, and a member of the service band. He was 20 years of age." - from the Melbourne Age 31 Jul 1915 (nla.gov.au)
