David was born in July 1894 in Echuca, Victoria, Australia. The son of John and Mary, Jane Smith. He was a Labour by trade, David volunteered for the AIF on 8 May 1916. Also in that same year he married Elizabeth Mary Campbell on 7 October 1916 in West Wallsend, New South Wales. He embarked shortly after. David was KIA on 21 July 1917 in Belgium at the age of 23, he left a wife and daughter. There is no known grave for him but his name appears on the Menin Gate Memorial Ypres Belgium.
