Youngest of three brothers (Norman and Fred) who served in WWII, Corporal Clarence Conrad LeLay (Service No:33896) enlisted in the RAAF on 17 September 1940 at No 2 Recruiting Centre Sydney as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Fitter. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 1 September 1941, LAC LeLay was attached to 77 Squadron and 17 Repair and Salvage Unit (RSU), and served overseas (including Milne Bay, Nadzab and Morotai) with 75 Squadron. Corporal LeLay was attached to 1 Central Recovery Depot at Discharge on 14 March 1946.
Clarrie was born at Peak Hill via Parkes, New South Wales in 1921, youngest of four children (sons) of William Thomas LeLay (b1878 in Hartley via Lithgow, New South Wales) and Edith Emma Lucas (b1883 in Bourke, New South Wales). William and Edith married in Sydney in 1904, and lived in Nyngan, Peak Hill, Trewilga and Brewarrina. William was a long term Railways Employee - Ganger and Fettler - and a member of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows.
Clarrie worked in Peak Hill as a Mechanic at Ashcroft's Garage and Service Station before enlisting in the RAAF. Following his Discharge, Clarrie joined his brother Fred in Kumbia via Kingaroy QLD, as a partner in Kumbia Motors. Clarrie was active in his local community, and served as Press Correspondent for the Kumbia Sub Branch of the RSL. Clarrie died in 1997.
