William Cockman was the son of James Samuel and Emma Jane Cockman of Wanneroo in Western Australia.

His three brothers all returned to Australia, 4580 Pte. Ross Roy Cockman 4th Machine Gun Battalion, twice wounded, 7455 Pte. Wesley John Cockman 44th Battalion and 3627 Pte. Ernest John Cockman 44th Battalion. (severely wounded thigh)

William was reported missing during the last Australian assault on Mouquet Farm. His remains were found in 1919 by a Canadian Burial Party and he was reinterred in the Pozieres British Cemetery.
