William Herbert Pappin was the son of William Green Pappin and his second wife Jane Wilson (Gardiner) who were farmers near Williamstown, South Australia.

William was the third child of seven born to William and Jane Pappin.

He had moved to Victoria and enlisted in Melbourne.

He is memorialised on a double headstone in the Williamstown, SA Cemetery with his sister Henrietta 'Hetty' Mary Pappin (3.4.1885 - 1.5.1913)
