Distinguished Conduct Medal
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He attacked two pill boxes with his section, killing several and capturing five of the enemy. During the attack on a strong point he showed coolness and judgment of a high order in handling his men, and gallantly led them in an attack on the position.'

GREAT SACRIFICE MADE
No. 3973. Corporal A. L. Webber, D.C.M. added his name to the long
list of public school boys who , distinguished themselves in the war. He did his duty nobly, but, unfortunately, made the great sacrifice.
The youngest son of Mrs Webber, of Springvale road, Tunstall, and the late Mr R. J. Webber, when he left the Caulfield Grammar School Corporal Webber engaged in farming at Poowong, South Gippsland. He enlisted in September 1915, and left Australia on November 23, the same year. After spending some time in Egypt, he went to France with the 6th Battallon, and was wounded in the battle of Pozieres, and again in May, 1917. He had just returned to duty when a gallant and well-judged attack by his section at Ypres gained for him the Distinguished Conduct Medal. Two pill-boxes were giving trouble at a very strong enemy point. Corporal Webber led his section in an attack on them, killing several of the occupants, and capturing five others. In a subsequent engagement he was wounded a third time, and died at No. 12 General Hospital in France, late last year.
