Robert was the son of Frederick William and Lucy Wilkins, of Chain of Lagoons, Tasmania.
He was accidentally killed 1 November 1917 at Arques, France, when he was trying to board a troop train and slipped beneath the wheels of the moving train.
His brother 6605 Pte. Harold Wilkins 12th Battalion AIF, was awarded a Military Medal for beating off a German counter attack in 1918
