Frederick Gaffney served with the 24th Battalion at Gallipoli from late August 1915. He was evacuated sick with rheumatism during the bitter cold November weather at Anzac. Later he developed valvular disorder of the heart and he was returned to Australia during early 1916.
Frederick enlisted again during September 1916 and was in training at Claremont Camp in Tasmania when he he suffered spinal injuries during a swimming accident. He was admitted to a Hobart hospital on the 10 January but died of his injuries almost 4 weeks later.
