Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Dick Fopp Service Number 3181 born July 16th, 1885, to mother Wilhelmina Fopp and Father Adolph Fopp in Tanunda South Australia. In 1897 The Fopp Family welcomed their second son Con Emil Fopp. Fopp was an accountant living in the suburb of St Peters, Adelaide before he enlisted into the Australian Military Forces on the 18th of July 1915, two days after his 31st birthday. Fopp’s brother Con Emil also previously enlisted earlier into the Australian Military Forces in early January of 1915 at the age of 18.

Dick enlisted for the Australian Military Forces on July 18th, 1915, at the Keswick barracks, SA. Fopp had described himself as 5 foot 10 inches, 194 lbs(87kg), brown hair, male with blue eyes and fair skin. He also had a distinctive detail about himself to help special forces recognise him if he passed or was wounded and had lost his dog tag, which was his gold filling on the top left side of his mouth. He was promoted to Sergeant on the 7th Febraury 1916 for the journey from Australia and then reverted to Private onthe 6th April 1916.

Fopp belonged to the 27th Infantry Battalion and on April 7th, 1916, the Battalion entered a small town in the north of France called Poziere, where they fought in the Battle of Pozieres between the date of July 1st and August 5th.  Fopp was sadly wounded on July 20th 1916 and was sent to Brighton, England where he recovered from his injuries and returned to duty in November of 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 1st January 1917.

Fopp went back to Australia on December 30th, 1919. Before his departure, Fopp fought in the last hundred days, which was the hundred day period of fighting in which at the end the German attacks in the war had come to a halt. Fopp was discharged from WW1 in 1920.

When Fopp returned to Australia from WW1 in 1920 he brought back his newley married wife Dorothy Fopp. The two married in Sutton Veny, a small village in the Wylye Valley of Wiltshire, England on the 26th of March 1919. The two went on to live in Cudlee Creek, Adelaide, South Australia and had one son together named Desmond Fopp born March 13th 1920 in Cudlee Creek. Sadly 14 years later Fopp passed away on July 16th 1934. Cause and place of death not identified.
