The eldest son of 4 siblings, Victor, Betty and Jack ,he was first in the family to enlist for service iafter the outbreak of WW2.

He was followed by his brother Vic who went on to recieve the Distinguished Flying Cross after many sorties over Germany . His story is also on this site.

Whilst enlisted ,Bede was selected as the boxer representing the RAAF at sporting  tournaments . He supported and trained the local boys and refrereed many bouts around the local area, prior to enlistment. He played tennis, cricket and football , but loved the horse races and often had a flutter . Each year he travelled to Grafton to the horse races.
